Age criteria for entry to Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram

Academic year 2026-27

WHAT IS THE AGE CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION?

Ensuring the perfect developmental fit

Every year group has a clearly defined minimum age for school admission in India, based on the Cambridge curriculum structure and aligned with British school admission age standards. The age requirement exists not to create barriers, but to ensure every child is placed in the year group that is genuinely right for their stage of development, learning readiness, and social maturity.

Understanding the admission age criteria before applying saves time and avoids unnecessary uncertainty. The table below gives you everything you need at a glance.

This is consistent with the British curriculum age criteria used by Cambridge schools internationally and applies to all year groups from Nursery through to Grade 12 (Year 13).

Age Cut-Off Date

How year groups are determined

The age cut-off for school admission to Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram is 31st August. This is the date against which your child's age is calculated for year group placement, from Nursery to Sixth Form.

To check eligibility: has your child reached the minimum age for their intended year group by 31st August of the academic year they are joining?

Yes - they meet the age criteria for that year group.

No - they would typically be placed in the year group below, or the application considered for the following academic year.

A worked example:

A child born on 15th September 2021 will be four years old on 15th September 2025. By 31st August 2025, however, they will still be three years old. This means they would meet the age eligibility date for nursery (EY1, minimum age 3) for the 2025-26 academic year, but would not yet meet the minimum age for EY2 (minimum age 4) until the 2026-27 academic year.

Why 31st August?

The 31st August cut-off is the standard used by Cambridge schools internationally and aligns with the British school admission cut-off date framework. It is used consistently across all year groups at Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram and is not subject to variation by year group or circumstance.

What if my child's birthday falls close to 31st August?

Children born in late August will meet the cut-off date for their year group. Children born in September or later will fall into the following year group. In cases where a family believes there are strong developmental, medical, or educational grounds for a different placement, a formal request can be submitted to the Principal and Inclusion Team for individual review. Such requests are considered carefully and on a case-by-case basis.

Lateral Entry and Mid-Year Admissions

Joining mid-stream or from another school

Not every family begins their school search in April or May. Relocations happen mid-year. Boards are switched after a child's Grade 5 (Year 6) or Grade 8 (Year 9) results. International assignments bring families to Gurugram at unexpected times of the year. At Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram, we understand this reality and our admissions process is designed to accommodate it.

Lateral entry refers to joining any year group other than EY1. At QE, Gurugram, lateral entry is available in most year groups subject to available places seats, and the transfer admission age policy follows the same 31st August cut-off framework as standard admissions.

How lateral entry placement works:

When a student applies for lateral entry, our Admissions Team confirms the appropriate year group based on the child's date of birth and the 31st August cut-off. This is done regardless of which class the student was enrolled in at their previous school, because different boards and school systems sometimes place children in year groups that do not align with the Cambridge framework.

For example, a student from a CBSE school who was in Class 7 may be placed in Year 7 or Year 8 at Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram depending on their date of birth. Our team explains this clearly and ensures every family understands the reasoning before placement is confirmed.

Switching school age criteria in India:

For families considering mid-year school admission in India or a board switch from CBSE or ICSE to Cambridge, the age criteria remain the same. The Cambridge school lateral entry process at Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram also includes an academic assessment to confirm readiness and identify any bridging support required, alongside the standard age verification.

Relocation to India: Admission to schools

For families relocating to Gurugram from another Indian city or abroad, our Admissions Team can move quickly through the process. Mid-year places are considered in most year groups where space is available. Please contact our Admissions Office as early as possible to confirm availability and begin the process.

Age Criteria for Boarding

A place to learn, grow and lead

Boarding at QE Gurugram is available across three arrangements: Day Boarding, Weekly Boarding, and Full Boarding. There is a minimum age requirement for boarding schools in India for each arrangement, but age alone is never the only consideration.

Minimum age for boarding: For Day Boarding and Weekly Boarding, the minimum age aligns with the standard year group entry ages in the table above. Full Boarding is available from Grade 4 (Year 5) onwards and is consistent with the age for Grade 4 (Year 5) boarding admission in India standard used by reputable British boarding schools.

Beyond age: emotional and social readiness

At Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram, we do not place a child in full residential boarding based on age eligibility alone. Our admissions process for boarding students includes an assessment of emotional and social maturity alongside academic readiness.

This means that even if a child meets India's minimum age requirement for residential schooling, our pastoral and admissions teams will assess whether the child is genuinely ready for independence, community living, and the structured routine that boarding involves.

What we look for in a boarding-ready student:

A child who is ready to board is typically one who is comfortable separating from family for extended periods, able to manage personal routines with some guidance, socially confident in peer group settings, and academically settled in their year group. These are not pass or fail criteria, but they are the dimensions our pastoral team discusses openly with every family considering boarding.

For families with younger children asking about boarding school admission age in India, our honest advice is always to have a conversation with our team rather than rely solely on an age number. Every child is different, and we take that seriously.

Day scholar to boarder transition:

For day scholar to boarder transition in India, the process is equally considered. A student already enrolled as a day scholar who wishes to transition to boarding will have a readiness conversation with our pastoral team before the switch is confirmed.

Age criteria for school admissions exist to ensure every child is placed in a learning environment that genuinely matches their stage of cognitive, social, and emotional development. Placing a child too early in a year group can lead to academic and social difficulties that affect their confidence and progress for years. Placing a child too late can mean they are understimulated and disengaged. The importance of admission age lies in this alignment between a child's developmental stage and the demands of the curriculum they are placed into. At Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram, age-based admission is applied consistently because it is the most reliable starting point for ensuring every child thrives from day one.

This is one of the most common questions families ask, and it deserves a direct answer. The cut-off date for kindergarten admission at Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram is 31st August, and this date is applied consistently. A child whose birthday falls on 1st September or later will not have reached the required age by the cut-off date and would therefore be considered for the year group below, or for the following academic year. Borderline age admission requests are considered individually by the Principal and Inclusion Team where there are formal developmental, medical, or educational grounds for a placement adjustment. Age exception at school is not routine, but it is considered fairly and transparently where genuine circumstances warrant it.

Queen Elizabeth's School, Gurugram follows the British curriculum age requirement framework established by Cambridge Assessment International Education, which uses 31st August as the age reference date. This is consistent with international school age standards applied by Cambridge schools in over 160 countries. Where Haryana Education Department regulations specify requirements, the school ensures full compliance. Families coming from CBSE schools, where a different cut-off date may apply, should note that the Cambridge framework uses 31st August rather than 31st March, which can affect year group placement in some cases. Our Admissions Team will always clarify the implications for your specific child.

Children who are 5 by 31st August are considered ready for the structured learning programme that Year 1 introduces, having completed either EY1 and EY2 or an equivalent early years programme elsewhere.
